In 2006 my sister Sarah Ramirez took over Floral Creations by Wayne, a floral design studio with a 25 year history. At the time I didn't know anything about the floral industry, but I knew that my sister was a very talented floral designer. After carefully considering the pros and cons, it seemed that she had a unique opportunity to take an undervalued company to the next level and beyond.

Our initial focus was to re-introduce ourselves to our existing clients letting them know that we were extending our delivery zone to cover all of Los Angeles, while still offering very reasonable pricing. With that accomplished, we began to focus on introducing ourselves to new clients within the various sectors of the L.A. business community. Most importantly we began to broaden our online presence. Our efforts were rewarded with a dramatic 30% increase in business in 2007.

In 2007 we were nominated Best Florist in Los Angeles by myfoxla alongside such notable floral design studios as Tic-Tock Couture Florals and Empty Vase, and we were featured on Good Day LA with Rick Dickert.

The Partner | Rocket Science Laboratories | Fox Television
  Supervising Producer
The Partner | Fox Television | Rocket Science Laboratories

The Partner was a reality competition centering around young hot shot lawyers. Similar in format to The Apprentice with Donald Trump, produced by Mark Burnett.

The challenge in putting this show together was setting up an environment that was believable and interesting for the viewer. The production legal research department was working around the clock to come up with well thought out challenge cases. They had to not only come up with a variety of cases, but throroughly research the validity of the arguments from both sides of each and every case.

The art department, led by Production Designer Dan Butts, had their work cut out for them building a courtroom set on stage complete with a dramatic entryway, in addtion to dressing a loft space in which the contestants were going to reside for the period of the competition. They did a remarkable job.

Unfortunately Fox Television decided to remove The Partner from the schedule 3 weeks prior to the commencement of principal photography due to concerns about poor performance from similar formats.

Trading Spouses Meet Your New Mommy | Rocket Science Laboratories | Fox Television
  Supervising Producer
Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy Production Crew - Boston

Trading Spouses was a reality based docudrama examining what happens when you take two contrasting families and switch mom's for a week to see what can be learned from the experience.

From a creative standpoint, it was apparent that the magic of the program would be in the casting to find families that were very different in order to achieve the ultimate organic fish out of water experience.

From a production standpoint, the challenge was having two full production crews working independently in different states simultaneously, sometimes from opposite coasts, while not losing sight of one seamless episodic storyline. Additionally, two additional prep crews would be preparing the next shoot locations in advance of the production crew.

I was able to design a cost-effective production model early in development which we perfected in the production of the first two seasons, and RSL continued to utilize in the production of additional episodes.

My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance | Rocket Science Laboratories | Fox Television
  Line Producer
My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance, sean C alvarez

My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance was a reality hybrid competition format where the female contestant's challenge was to convince her family and friends that she had found the man of her dreams. Unbeknownst to her, her fellow contestant was in on the gag. His job was to make it as difficult as possible for her parents to believe that THIS was the man that their daughter was destined to spend the rest of her life with.

The challenge for the production team was to create an environment where all of this partially scripted reality could take place as organically as possible, while simultaneously hiding the true identity of the actor involved from not only the female contestant, but her entire family. From couple activities to planning a wedding, to traveling home, all culminating in the wedding ceremony complete with family and guests.

The Next Joe Millionaire | Rocket Science Laboratories | Fox Television
  Line Producer
The Next Joe Millionaire | Villa Oliva, Tuscany

"The second installment, following the same premise, was set in Northern Italy with fourteen English-challenged European contestants.

However, the show's popularity, which depended entirely on its charade, dissolved very quickly. Viewers were not taken with the cowboy protagonist David Smith, who appeared more enamored with his horse than the contestants.

The show's climax occurred when one of the contestants, identified only as Linda, from "Czech" (in Smith's words), was brought back to the show after being "mistakenly" eliminated and was later selected by Smith as the winner. By that time, though, the show's popularity had irreversibly declined, and no more seasons were produced.

A theme throughout the second series was the place of materialism and surface beauty in world culture. The show presented the world as a tapestry lain out for the contestants to frolic in, not as a real environment where real people live.

Linda and David went back to Texas to get married, share the $250,000 prize money, and live on the 90-acre ranch included as a prize. He currently works in sales for an oilfield compressor leasing company." Courtesy of Wikipedia

Drunken Jackasses: The Quest | Wrap Crew Cabo

Plot Synopsis: "Mike Fleiss, the producer of such reality television shows as The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, makes his feature film debut with The Quest, a reality-film that follows seven Colorado college students as they travel south of the border to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for a week of spring-break debauchery. The title refers to the various sexual conquests of the young men as they immerse themselves in alcohol and bikini-clad women for seven days. The Quest was originally planned to go head-to-head with New Line's The Real Cancun, another spring-break reality-film, but Universal opted to withhold it from release for more than a year." Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

It goes without saying that there were many challenges with putting this show together. We had to follow seven college kids from Colorado to Cabo San Lucas on Spring Break. To begin with, the Colorado production team was hit with an unexpected blizzard.

Joe Millionaire | Rocket Science Laboratories | Fox Television
  Line Producer
Joe Millionaire | My Production Crew in Paris

Joe Millionaire was a reality dating competition in which Evan Marriott was portrayed as a bachelor who had inherited millions of dollars and was searching for a potential bride. We hosted a group of hopeful women to the Château de la Bourdaisière in France to compete for his affection. The main gimmick of the show was that the entire "millionaire" premise was actually an elaborate lie. Once all other contestants were eliminated the secret was revealed to the last remaining woman, Zora Andrich. She decided to stay with him anyway, and they were surprised with a real check for a million dollars. The final episode took in 40 million viewers.

The primary challenge for us in production was that in addition to the contestants, the majority of the crew did not know the secret behind the show premise. Additionally, we were shooting the entire series on location throughout France most of the time having to set-up elaborate and exotic dates at a moment's notice. While extremely challenging, I believe that this "on the fly" approach gave the first season it's organic feel and contributed to the overall success of the series.

Law & Order: Crime & Punishment | Wolf Films | NBC
  Production Manager
Law & Order Crime & Punishment, Sean Alvarez

Crime & Punishment was a reality spin-off of the Law & Order franchise created by Dick Wolf. The series went inside the District Attorney's office of San Diego, CA, as they prepared and tried cases throughout the county. We went behind the scenes with the prosecutors as they prepared for trial. Once in the courtroom, we utilized a remote-controlled three-camera system to bring the viewer inside the actual trial process.

With the multitude of cases to follow we had 6 or more ENG crews shooting HD at any one time for an extended production period. The enormous amount of footage called for a very organized editorial process at our primary production office at Lantana Center in Santa Monica, CA.

Cahoots, sean C alvarez
Synopsis: "Two men who were "best friends" while growing up together and into their 20's, reconnect after years apart. On the surface, their lives have gone in opposite directions, one married, successful, respectful and settled; the other divorced, footloose, unemployed and prowling. The narrative is not linear but vertical as simple get together to "have a drink" leads to a nihilistic descent into macho hell. The only thing that survives their reunion is their love for one another." Written by Cahoots Productions.

For whatever reason, he brings out paternal feelings in an 18-year prison veteran, Earl Copan (Willem Dafoe), who takes Ron under his wing. The film explores the nature of that relationship, Ron's part in Earl's gang, and the way Ron deals with aggressive cons intent on assault and rape. There's casual racism, too, in the prisoners and the guards, a strike called by Black prisoners, and the nearly omnipresence of hard drugs. Ron's lawyer is working on getting Ron out quickly, Earl has a shot at parole, and death seems to be waiting in the next cell. Will prison turn Ron into an animal?" Written by jhailey@hotmail.com

Big companies like Monsters, Inc. collect the scream energy, and many monsters work there in shifts. In these times, it is getting harder and harder to shock the kids properly, since they're so spoiled by television, so that there's an energy shortage in the monster world. Sulley, the number one frightener, one day accidentally lets a human child into the monster world. Since kids are supposed to be poisonous and carry loads of diseases, pandemonium ensues. After Mike and Sulley discover that the girl they named Boo actually seems quite harmless, they decide to bring her back through her door into her room. But Boo's presence is more than just a mere accident. Now, Mike and Sulley have to face an enemy within their own ranks." Written by Julian Reischl
